A toilet that won't flush properly, or that empties slowly and then refills too high, is usually a simple clear. But a toilet that blocks repeatedly, especially if it's the only one in the house doing it, often points to a partial blockage further down the soil pipe rather than anything wrong with the toilet itself.

We clear the immediate blockage first so the toilet is usable again, then check whether it's a one-off or a sign of something further along the run that needs a proper look.

In Headingley's shared student houses, toilets get a lot of use and a lot of wipes. In older terraces, soil pipes can be narrow or sagging. We clear the pan and check whether the real problem is further down.

Signs you need this

  • Toilet flushes slowly or water rises higher than usual
  • Toilet has blocked more than once in the last few weeks
  • Gurgling from the toilet when another appliance drains
  • Bad smell around the base of the toilet

How we handle it

  • 1 Quick assessment over the phone — is it just this toilet, or other fixtures too
  • 2 Clear the blockage, usually with rods or an auger
  • 3 Flag if the pattern suggests a soil pipe issue worth investigating

Questions people ask

Can you fix it without removing the toilet?

Most blockages clear from the pan or the nearest access point without lifting the toilet. We'd only need to remove it if the blockage sits in the trap itself, which is uncommon.

What shouldn't go down the toilet?

Wipes, cotton buds, nappies and sanitary products are the biggest cause of repeat blockages — even ones marked 'flushable' don't break down the way toilet paper does.
